Oil on Board in a Gilt Frame Depicting houses on a waterway, ATHERSTONE, Signed and dated lower right: A C Rodriguez 87. A California-born landscape painter, Alfred Rodriguez was doing his best work when he died at age 28 from consumption. He studied at the San Francisco School of Design and with Jules Tavernier and then at age 18, set up a studio in Oakland. He became quite popular in the art 1880s California world and often did sketching trips into Northern California accompanied by his pupils Harry Cassie Best and George Redding. Few of his works are extant.
Condition: good, slight inpainting in the clouds.
