Description: Ottoman Empire Marine Painting; Oil on Canvas laid on board; Signed lower left E.K. Waum ; Circa 1850; depicting a group of war ships sailing the flag of the ottoman empire and Turkey, The flag of the Ottoman Empire and later that of Turkey- is called Ay Yaldiz which means moon star. The crescent and star, while being Islamic symbols have long been used by the turks even before the advent of Islam. The flag was originally simply a crescent on a green field, but this was changed in 1793 to red. In 1844 the star was added.
Condition: is great overall. Inspection under a black light reveals minor inpainting, the majority of which is where the canvas meets the frame.
