Description: American Primitive Childs Portrait, Circa 1780-5; most probably painted by Robert Edge Pine- a British born painter who was working in America during this time; depicting a young girl in a long gown holding flowers from the tree behind her. This painting shows the french influence present in american portraiture of this period. Wood analysis on the stretcher bars by the Center for Wood Anatomy Research found that they are a species of Red Pine, which is a native american pine predominately found throughout New England, New York, and Pennsylvania. An X-Ray reveals that there has not been any changes, alterations or damage to the canvas under the lining.
Condition: the canvas has been lined. under a blacklight bits of inpainting are visible near the border where the painting meets the frame. the stretcher appears to be original.
