George H Bogert (AMERICAN, 1864-1944) Oil Venice
Description: George Henry Bogert (AMERICAN, 1864-1944) Oil on Canvas in a Giltwood Frame, Depicting Venice at Sunset. Signed Lower Right G H Bogert. Bogert studied in Paris at the NAD in 1884 along with Puvis de Chavannes, Aime Morot and Boudin. He also was a contemporary of Thomas Eakins. While in France, he painted landscapes at Grez and the coast of Normandy. He returned to NYC in 1888, traveling again to Europe in the 1890s, where he painted in Venice, the Isle of Wight and in Northern France. Bogert exhibited extensively from 1883-1907, where he won many awards. His paintings currently hang in museums in the United States, Scotland, and China. This piece was most likely executed in 1895.
