American Folk Art Polychromed Jockey 19th C Description: American Folk Art Polychromed Statue of a Jockey, Circa 1870-80; wearing a cap and dressed in racing attire, with a steel ring in his right hand, standing on a rectangular plinth. Provenance: by oral tradition- Canfield Casino, Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga NY; Acquired by a Kentuckian when the Casino and Grounds were sold in 1911, and descended in the family to today. This provenance is reinforced by a wood analysis done by the Center for Wood Anatomy Research in Madison WI on October 25, 2005; which found that it is carved from Red Pine. Red Pine is a native american pine predominately found throughout New England, New York, and Pennsylvania and into Canada. Condition: is great overall, repair to right arm where it meets the body.
